Toto Wolff is in advanced talks to sell a portion of his shareholding in the Mercedes Formula 1 team.

This transaction estimates the Mercedes team at £4.6bn – an unprecedented figure for an F1 team – following McLaren were valued at £3.5 billion in an adjustment to corporate structure last September.

Wolff, who owns a 33% stake of the Mercedes F1 operation, would sell a stake approximately five percent.

The 53-year-old would stay on as team boss and chief executive officer if the sale goes through.

Ownership Breakdown

Remaining partners in the team are Mercedes and industrial group Ineos, who both hold a third of the company.

A Mercedes spokesperson said: "We are providing no official statement on this. The management structure of the team will remain unchanged, and all three partners are dedicated to continued achievements of Mercedes-Benz in F1."

Financial Increase

The deal signifies a significant increase in worth of Mercedes F1 after Ineos Group bought its stake for £208 million in 2022.

The rise reflects the growth in market values of Formula 1 outfits recently as a consequence of the increasing appeal of the sport globally.

This trend was evident with the success of the F1 movie starring Hollywood star Brad Pitt, which debuted last summer and earned over $630 million (£458m) at cinemas worldwide.

The film represents Pitt's most successful film and the most successful sports film to date.

Present Performance

The Mercedes team are second in the constructors' championship, behind McLaren, with three races left in the current championship.

Mercedes' primary racer George Russell has secured victory in two of the 21 races so far and is in fourth place in the individual standings after McLaren's Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, and Red Bull's Max Verstappen.

The team won a unprecedented eight straight team titles and seven driver championships, six for Lewis Hamilton and one by Nico Rosberg, from 2014 to 2021.
