Users Discontinuing Weight-Loss Jabs Put On Weight Four Times Faster Than Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment often requires long-term strategies.

A recent study suggests that individuals who stop using popular GLP-1 drugs like semaglutide or tirzepatide can put back on reduced body mass far faster than those who end conventional lifestyle programs.

Findings released in a major medical journal demonstrates that while obese individuals often shed about a fifth of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"Users purchasing such drugs should be cognizant of the risk of rapid rebound weight gain when the therapy is stopped," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery suggests a return to starting weight in about one and a half years.

Analyzing Approaches

The study, which reviewed 37 of trials involving thousands of participants, compared the effects of these new drugs with older methods.

Scientists point out that individuals who shed pounds through dieting usually experience a more gradual weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

Understanding the Fast Rebound

Nutrition scientists propose the mode of action of the jabs accounts for the accelerated weight return.

GLP-1 drugs mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.

"Long-term administration of the hormone levels far above than the body's typical production could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and may also lessen sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to appetite is no longer kept in check, making overeating far more likely."

A Chronic Disease?

Medical guidelines suggest the injections for people with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians say that, due to the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment is often life-long.

This perspective is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "emphasize the persistent nature of obesity," similar to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

User Testimonies

Individuals who have come off the jabs describe a intense return of cravings.

"It was like something activating and I was suddenly starving," described an individual.

This challenge is exacerbated if patients have not established permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.

Significant Adoption

Figures suggest that millions of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest being substantial.

  • Use is higher among women compared to men.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Ultimately, clinicians caution that while the jabs are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone cure and long-term success hinges on combined behavioural support.
