Cancellieri Shows Brief Sparks of Genius in Bright Spot for Unstable Lazio

The atmosphere at Lazio's home ground was far from happy on Saturday afternoon. Lazio were trailing against Torino, an opponent that had conceded ten goals while managing only two goals in their most recent five league matches. Fans from the Curva Nord were concluding their most recent demonstration in a continuous dispute with club owner Claudio Lotito.

This Year's Efforts Coming Unstitched?

Was Lazio's season coming unstitched, or did there exist a binding element holding it together to start with? Lazio reinstated Maurizio Sarri as head coach during the off-season, before he to later acknowledge that the board had failed to disclose the transfer ban they were set to be hit with for fiscal problems. Speculation that he could resign were without basis, but he acknowledged that Lotito had "deceived" him.

The Biancocelesti were just as chaotic on the pitch as they were off it, beating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but being defeated in the rest of their opening fixtures, including the Rome derby. At any given moment, observers have struggled to ascertain if they are improving or imploding.

Matteo's Surprising Comeback

At least one man remained positive throughout. Matteo Cancellieri wasn't originally meant to remain with Lazio during this campaign. He spent last season at Parma as a loanee and, at the start of the off-season, his owning club were advocating for him to stay there for another season. The signing restriction led to a change of plans. Lazio could not afford to thin their squad lacking backup options.

Cancellieri arrived originally during Sarri's previous tenure, then a 20-year-old graduate of Verona's academy. He made 20 Serie A appearances in Lazio colors in the 2022-23 season, the vast majority of those as a substitute. The ex- sporting director, Igli Tare, who left after that campaign, would later accuse Sarri of "promising everyone Cancellieri had superstar potential then never playing him."

Uncovering His Best Role

It's possible the coach was still trying to work out the exact type of the player's talent. Billed as an attacking winger on arrival, Cancellieri instead found himself the majority of that term as an unconvincing alternative to Ciro Immobile at No 9. During 63 outings during spells with Empoli and Parma over the last two seasons, his tally was seven goals. Shoehorn
